Palm trimming in Florida

Frond and seed pod removal, the most common recurring job in Central Florida.

What the work involves

Palms are trimmed for genuine reasons: dead fronds, seed pods and fruit that fall onto cars, paths and pool cages, and nesting habitat close to a roof. What they should not receive is the severe upward trim sometimes called hurricane cutting, which strips healthy green fronds and leaves a narrow tuft. That weakens the palm, since the fronds are its food source, and offers no storm protection. Remove what is dead or dying and leave the healthy canopy alone.

What tree work costs in Florida

Single tree removal, typical Florida range$400 to $2,500
Single tree removal, common average$1,100 to $1,400
Small tree, under 30 feet$200 to $800
Medium tree, 30 to 60 feet$800 to $2,500
Large tree, 60 to 80 feet$2,500 to $5,000
Very large or hazardous, 80 feet and up$5,000 to $15,000 and up

Ranges are typical Florida market figures for 2026 and are published as a guide only. Height, trunk diameter, species, how close the tree stands to a house or power line, and whether a crane is needed all move the final number. Stump grinding and haul away are often quoted separately. Get the price in writing before work starts.

Choosing someone for palm trimming

Florida does not issue a statewide tree contractor licence, so insurance is the thing to verify. Ask for a certificate of general liability and workers compensation cover and confirm it with the insurer named on it, check whether the crew includes an ISA certified arborist, and get a written scope covering which trees, the stump, and debris removal before any work begins.

Palm trimming questions

How often should palms be trimmed in Florida?
Once or twice a year is enough for most species, mainly to clear dead fronds and seed pods. More frequent heavy trimming does the palm harm rather than good.
Is hurricane cutting good for palms?
No. Stripping healthy green fronds removes the palm’s energy source and does not improve storm resistance. Arborists consistently advise against it.
